Why Aldona from Guam Vacations in Chamonix

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Chamonix Mont Blanc is a unique town with the awe inspiring Mont Blanc and jagged glaciers, tumbling seracs, blue ice formations and raging torrents. It is a mecca for alpinists and skiers alike, although there is plenty to do for the less thrill seeking visitor. Each of us enjoy going canyoning or even eating out. I sometimes travel from Minneapolis and stay at a Chamonix guesthouse during my break.

I previously stayed in Comfort Inn and Suites Knoxville unfortunately it sometimes didn’t live up to its its advert: Comfort Inn and Suites Knoxville is located approximately 16 miles from McGhee-Tyson Airport. Local attractions include downtown Knoxville. Hotel amenities include the outdoor courtyard, outdoor pool, and indoor whirlpool. The inn also offers a complimentary hot breakfast and evening reception with two drinks (alcoholic or non-alcoholic).

However in Chamonix Haute Savoie the hotel is always outstanding. As well eating out in our preferred French restaurant, Ala Marios Pizza, scoffing violet jam is a pleasure. Chamonix Mont Blanc France is a big enough destination to guarantee that there is lots of things for the snowboarder to do. Amongst other things it includes a casino and a strip of bars, Chamonix provides a mix of skiing, alpine charm and tourist attractions which few ski resorts can match.

Hit Longer Drives…Here’s How

Friday, October 31st, 2008

To hit longer drives is the dream of every golfer on the planet! Even the professionals players want to hit longer drives. Is there a magic bullet? Do you really know what it takes to dramatically improve your driving distance?

I’ll bet your first answer will be a new driver at $500. Am I right? If not a driver…take more golf lessons. Am I getting warmer yet? If I still haven’t guessed right…hit more balls at the range? Am I scorching hot yet?

The key to hit longer drives is clubhead speed and solid ball-clubface contact. That’s it! Seems easy enough right?

Not!

The ONLY way to improve clubhead speed is to have optimal strength and flexibility in your core region. This is the area of your body that creates the torque on the backswing that is unleashed at impact.

How many times have you tried to swing hard and the ball didn’t go anywhere? I’ve been there. How many times did you “just not care” and all of a sudden the ball rocketed off the clubface.

That one time…you were relaxed and probably made a bigger backswing, therefore producing more torque (energy). But I’ll bet you have a hard to repeating that don’t you? That’s because your body has physical limitations that will not allow you to repeatedly make a full backswing and store that energy.

By incorporating rotational strength and flexibility exercises specific to the golf swing, you will see dramatic increases in clubhead speed and distance.

I’ve seen increases of 50 yards!

Now if you are already driving it 260 plus yards, you may not see a 50 yard increase, but you could realistically see a 30 yard increase.

It’s all about getting your body to move a little better within your golf swing.

So next time you get the motivation to improve your driving distance…think of working on your body…not swing harder.

The ultimate goal is to hit longer drives!

Got Golf Information Overload?

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

You’ve come home from work dead tired. You grab the mail on your way in and notice your new copy of your favorite golfing magazine is in the pile. It puts a slight smile on your face as a picture of you on a couch with an adult beverage suddenly pops into your mind. After getting into your evening uniform (sweats and slippers) you make your way to your favorite reclining device with that drink and a snack in hand to make that vision on the couch a reality. You get all settled with the TV on for background and you finally enter the “Jell Zone” to enjoy that golf magazine and your well-deserved relaxation period.

You go straight to the table of contents to see what is the most interesting article and there it is, swing advice from the winner of the last major tournament. “This is just what I need,” you say to yourself as you flip to the correct page knowing that your club tournament is 2 months away.

The article has one of those swing-sequence photo frames. It has some quotes from other pros. It has a sidebar from the “Top instructor of all time” with his ideas of the perfect swing. The second page of the article is dwarfed by an advertisement for the greatest swing gadget ever created by a human and endorsed by sixteen instruction schools in five countries. The author talks about how he “remade” his swing prior to winning that major but that his best buddy on tour is struggling using the same method and swing guru.
The captions on each of the swing-sequence photos point out the minute details of where parts of the body of the pro are at 10 different positions during the swing and which of those are “technically not correct”.

You don’t want to give up on the article, since you really do need the swing advice, so you go to your dressing room mirror and check a couple of your body parts with some of the pictures in the article while attempting to freeze your swing at the same points as the stop-action photos. “I got it!” you tell yourself when you match a couple of these positions and then practice them outside with your real club. You congratulate yourself and then sit back down in your easy chair to get back to the business of relaxing.

A little later in the evening, you flip to the Golf Channel and instead of the usual tournament from 1994 there is a lesson program from a pro instructor. Lo and behold, he teaches that the move you worked so hard on an hour ago was the prevailing instruction of the 1980’s and has since been proven to be “unreliable in competition”.

You jump out of your chair to go check your favorite golf sites about this guy on the show and it seems that he is everywhere when you do a search for him. A couple of articles you land on say he has the best golf instruction this side of the border and a couple more take pride in picking him apart. The instructor’s own website is loaded with testimonials from his students on how well his program worked for them so you keep surfing for further info.

This leads you to golf discussion boards, blogs, ezines, and untold numbers of websites that say that they have the secret to how to swing correctly. 3 hours later, you wake up from your golf web-surfing trance, realize you missed your bedtime an hour ago, and are now more confused than you were when before you opened that magazine in the mail.
You found more advice than your mind can process on a weekend day let alone a day that you had 3 meetings, your best employee quit, and your boss said something like: “…if you can’t (blah blah blah)…. we’ll find someone who will”.

Ok, that story was a bit exaggerated for most people (truth for me), but the point still stands:
There’s just too much instruction and tips on golf out there and we just don’t know what to do with it all!
And worse, you can find a lot of it that is exactly the opposite from one instructor (or pro) to the other. Many of you are well aware of this fact but still get caught up in something seemingly new that gets printed or posted that could potentially be hazardous to your game. And it’s not just us amateurs that get lost in this maze. Sports psychologists make a pretty penny on their touring professionals teaching them how to “Simplify” their swings and thought processes and “Focus” on what works for them.

So, what should we do about this problem? It’s very simple: just realize that more is not better for golf instruction and to continue to read and listen to golf tips with a very discriminating eye. Over the years, I have now come to the realization that most published golf instruction is designed for the better player and that a tip that works for the 5-handicapper could be a waste of time for a 20-handicapper. Not that it isn’t good advice, but the 20-hdcp should stop looking for more advice and start to work on something that will give him the greatest reduction in score for the time spent.

I know, I know, an article in a major magazine about “practicing good alignment” isn’t going to sell many copies even if it is 90% of all amateur golfer’s biggest problem. But the inescapable fact is, if you really wanted to get better at golf, you should read a basic instruction book like Ben Hogan’s “5 lessons The Modern Fundamentals of Golf.” And, only read one section at a time and work on what was taught in that section until it becomes a regular part of your game. And don’t read any further until you don’t have to think about it to do it correctly.

The other way to go is to pick an instructor or trainer and stick with them with a full set of lessons. You will need to actively ignore any other golf instruction that has the slightest hint of conflict with your lessons. If you run into something your instructor hasn’t taught you about, check with him/her. That is why golf lessons are spaced at least a week apart. Spaced repetition has long been known to be how we humans best learn things. It’s also why you can’t remember a darn thing about a subject 2 weeks after cramming for test on it.

Do the same thing with any other golf instruction that you find also. Don’t be tempted to jump ahead to Chapter 10 and see how to play a draw from a downhill slope because that ain’t gonna help you. O.k., I’m sorry to ruin your fun with your favorite golf magazine. So go ahead and give yourself permission to read and enjoy it again so long as you promise to yourself that you will stick to your plan of really trying to improve by working what you’ve learned one item at a time. Now get back to that couch and finish up that unwinding session you started. And since I’m already up, how’s your drink? Can I get you another one?

Bread Baking Made Easy

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Don’t you just hate it when you follow a recipe to the letter and when the bread baking is finished the bread not only looks nothing like the recipe book’s picture, but tastes terrible as well?

There is no denying that bread baking as with baking anything is a delicate process.

Bread baking involves so many things that first time bakers are often discouraged after a few failed attempts to turn out professional looking and tasting loaves.

Little do they realize that if they only possessed the professional Baker’s secrets bread baking would be so easy that the bread would practically make itself!

For instance: How many amateur bakers know the secret to keeping bread from sticking to the pan every time?

None! So when they try their hand at bread baking for the first time their bread sticks to the bread pan, and ends up a crumbled mess if they try to force it out.

Then they cry and give up thinking that the problem lies with them.

The shocking truth is that it doesn’t!

The problem lies with their lack of knowledge of THE baker’s bread
baking secret.

The secret professional chefs and bakers won’t tell you, the secret they guard so jealously.

My father happened to learn this bread baking secret in his younger baking days (which is no surprise since his great great grandfather was a chef for the White House and owned his own bakery) and has passed it on to his children ever since.

Okay, okay, I know you’re probably screaming at me by now “Beth, get on with it! Tell us the bread baking secret already!”

So here it is; You will need only one tool besides for the oil and bread pan you already have, and that is quite simply CORNMEAL (you shouldn’t need more than 1/4 to 1/2 cup for two loaves of bread).

“Cornmeal?” you ask doubtfully. “YES, cornmeal!”

No, you do not add the cornmeal to the bread ingredients! That is not the bread baking secret.

What you do is you oil your pan as usual, and you lightly sprinkle cornmeal on all of the sides and bottom of the bread pan.

Now you can safely place your bread dough into the pans without fear of it sticking to them.

While your bread is baking instead of sticking to the pan, your bread will stick to the cornmeal and slide easily out of the pan when done baking.

You may need to use a butter knife and slide it in between the pan and the bread before turning the pan over and allowing your bread to pop out.

A lot of the time this will be unnecessary however and your bread will pop out just by your turning the bread pan upside down.

You will probably also want to use the butter knife to scrape the excess cornmeal off the bottom and sides of the bread as you may not care for the taste of cornmeal.

This bread baking secret will work whether you’re baking a batter bread or a rising bread (also called yeast bread). I personally use it for both.

Here is another treasured bread baking secret, this one only for batter breads:

On the last ten minutes of its baking time cover the bread pan containing the batter bread with another bread pan (a steel bread pan works best), and leave it on until the bread is finished baking.

This will keep the batter bread from burning or becoming too hard on top. You may vary the time you leave the steel bread pan on according to how your batter bread usually looks when it is finished.

If it is a very dark brown on top and difficult to slice because the top is so hard, then 20 minutes will work best. But if it is just a little too hard on top and a little too brown the 10 minutes should suffice.

Do not cover the bread at all if it usually comes out golden and soft on top after the baking is completed.

You may also glaze a batter bread on top with a tablespoon of melted butter mixed with a tablespoon of honey, and sprinkle some flaked coconut or sliced nuts on top of that.

To glaze you start by taking the bread out of the oven five minutes before the required baking time is finished, then spread the butter/honey mixture on top of the bread, sprinkle on your coconut or chopped nuts and bake for the remaining 5 minutes.

Here is another useful bread baking tip for rising breads…

If your bread loaves over rise (say because you were busy and forgot about them), then you can use a pair of scissors to cut off the excess sides, being careful not to cut any dough from off of the top.

You may then use this excess dough to make rolls. You simply oil a pizza or cookie sheet and form the dough into several small balls.

Rise them for another half hour and then bake on 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown.

Do yourself a favor and put these tried and tested bread baking secrets immediately to use in your kitchen, and your family will rave over the results.

Hiking Shoes Versus Hiking Boots

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Hiking shoes versus hiking boots? Hiking shoes win. Okay, next issue? No, really. Hiking or running shoes are better for most backpacking trips, at least during late spring, summer and early fall. Boots are heavy, hot, stinky, and stay wet forever. A pound on your feet is like five on your back (some say six), so three-pound boots leave you much more tired at the end of the day.

Hiking Shoes And Ankle Support

You may have heard arguments for the necessity of ankle support, but throughout history people managed without stiff ankle-supporting boots. The problem is weak ankles, not a lack of support. You can solve this by walking a little each week on uneven ground (not in the mall).

Some may need boots, but be sure your ankle problems are not just due to a lack of exercise before you settle for backpacking in hiking boots. You may also need hiking boots if you carry more than thirty pounds when you backpack. Cut the weight down, though, and you’ll be more comfortable anyhow.

Why Running Or Hiking Shoes?

Feet stay cooler in a good running shoes than in hiking boots. This means fewer blisters. After switching to running shoes and lightweight socks years ago, I stopped getting blisters. I don’t mean fewer blisters. I mean haven’t had one blister since I switched. Not even after a 110-mile 7-day trek in the Rockies, for example.

How To Choose Your Shoes

Try to keep below two pounds per pair, unless you have size 13 feet. If the weights are not shown in a catalog, you’ll have to guess which hiking shoes are lighter based on the description and photo. Quality shoes have soles stitched to the uppers, so look under the insoles (a removable insole is another sign of quality shoes). You can usually find a good pair of running shoes that weighs less than 28 ounces for under $80, or half of that on closeouts.

There’s nothing quite as liberating as ditching the heavy pack and heavy boots and hitiing the trail in running shoes. You get to go more miles, and in comfort. You get to run up a hill just to see what’s there. I have yet to meet a person who has tried backpacking in hiking shoes or running shoes – and then returned to boots.

First Boat Trip Of 2005

First Boat Trip of 2005

Met my brother at the boat ramp around 11 in the morning. It
was the first time he got his boat
in the water this season. I was very surprised by how clear
the river was compared to the week
before. When we powered away from the ramp we started
planning where to start fishing. It was
then I noticed the fish finder was not in the boat. That
meant we had to fish spots we knew
about and hoped the fish would be there. I had intended to
use the fish finder to pinpoint
the fish to increase our odds of landing more fish than
usual for us.

My brother got all 6 rods baited up as we motored to the
fist spot. He used large chunks of
frozen skipjack as bait on all the rods. He has an array of
6 rod holders that allows a wide
area to be fished at the same time. We settled back once all
the lines were in the water at our
first stop. One of my brother’s rods got a good bite. The
fish hit it hard some more. My
brother did not get very concerned; he said he would just
let the fish hook himself. The rod
did not move any after he said that. We started to wind in
our lines to move to our next spot.
He picked up the rod that had the bite that is when he
realized the fish was still on the line.
When he got it to the top of the water he saw the catfish
had wrapped the line around its
body. There was no way it could use the tail section of its
body at all to swim off with the
line. My brother had to cut the line so the fish could be
free of the mess so he could take a
couple pictures. The Channel cat was in the 6 pound range
and good shape as he was returned to
the Licking River.

We checked out a number of other holes we knew about as we
traveled north on the river.
Without the fish finder we were just depending on the fish
to be in the spots they had been
weeks before. The fish did not co-operate with that plan so
we headed out into the Ohio River.
We had our lines in 3 different places with NO bites. Last
spot was a deep spot that I have
fished a lot of times in the past. The 30 feet deep area was
hard to hold the boat with the
faster current on the Ohio River. Once we got the boat
squared away and lines in the water we
relaxed. One of my brother’s rods got hit hard. He did not
get up to get the rod. By this
time the line was started to head out into the middle of the
river. I told him to get it before
the fish crossed up all the other rods. He did have the fish
for about 4 cranks of the reel
then the line went limp. That cat had cleaned off all the
bait. A short time after that I got a bite when I got my
line in the bait was all chewed up. I put
on a smaller piece of bait and cast it back to the same
general area. The rod started moving
with the bite. I picked it up and when he had the line tight
I set the hook. He was a small
blue cat around 3 pounds. He was easy to get into the boat
no need of a dip net. Took two
photos and he was swimming back to his home.

It was getting time for us to head on home as well. We
pulled up our anchors and got the
lines back in the boat. The 15 minute run back up the
Licking got us back to the ramp. The
shadows were getting long and the air was on the cold side
as the boat was on the trailer. We
were both ready to head back to a warm home after the day of
fresh air. We will be sure to have
our fish finder to locate the fish next time we use his
boat. Tight lines to all.

Dark Ages: History of the Negro Leagues in America

Monday, October 20th, 2008

The sport of baseball is often referred to as the “national pastime.” For years it has played an important role in many people’s lives, providing heroes and idols for millions of children and providing numerous memories of “spring eternal” for many others. Baseball’s popularity can be traced to many things: the dramatic one-on-one confrontations between the pitcher and batter, unlike any duel in any other sport; the last minute heroics by a rookie with a single swing of the bat in the bottom of the ninth inning; the strong feelings of romance and grandeur that one feels upon entering the stadium and seeing the playing field; and the strong, rich tradition of the game itself that has stood the test of time.
Another reason for our love affair with baseball is for the dreams that it has always provided. Many of us have imagined ourselves being the one to hit the game-winning homerun in the bottom of the ninth inning in Game Seven of the World Series or throwing a rare masterpiece — a perfect game. One of the reasons for this is because baseball is the one sport which requires no specific or special physical attributes in order to play. Unlike basketball, hockey, or football, baseball does not require its players to be of a specific height, weight, or body-build in order to participate. Whether fat or skinny, short or tall, we have all dreamt of playing baseball. Nothing could prevent us from playing baseball if only we possessed the skills. Nothing, that is, except for the color of one’s skin. From 1898 until 1946, African-Americans were not allowed to play professional major-league baseball. In order for them to fulfill their dreams and desires of playing baseball they formed their own leagues — the Negro Leagues.
