HSE Comes Together with Professional Associations to Promote Designer Safety Awareness

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

A one-day seminar will be conducted at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire on May 21st to spread awareness amongst those who design construction sites, about difficulties relating to health and safety that contractors and workers have to contend with. The HSE believes that by taking this step, the resultant improvement in the standards maintained by designers will help make the construction industry, currently the nation’s largest and most dangerous, much safer.

Cheryl Eeles, an officer of the HSE, stated that designers are key actors in the construction industry, whose increased awareness is vital if workers’ bad health and physical injuries are to be brought down. She was happy to announce that one of the longest-running cross-industry initiatives, Working Well Together (WWT), will complete ten years of existence in May. To commemorate the initiative’s beginning, designer safety awareness day is being organised by the HSE in collaboration with professional organisations.

The construction industry in the UK employs over two million people, but has the worst safety record in the country. Cheryl Eeles spoke about the benefits that stand to be reaped through better design practices, which she believes the initiative will result in. She said that improved efficiency, a more professional outlook, and workplace pride, apart from the natural decline in workplace injuries, are just some of the benefits of good design. When health and safety standards are incorporated into the design at the initial stages, it results in saving costs that would otherwise be incurred if changes have to be made at later stages.

The HSE is optimistic about the outcome of the seminar, and is hoping that a large number of designers can benefit from it.

Keep up-to-date with health and safety regulations that can save employees from serious injury and avoid court procedures that can cost companies many thousands of pounds. Visit the Workplace Law website and find out about the range of accredited iosh training courses for information about how your company can avoid falling foul of health and safety legalities.

Graduation Gowns

Graduation ceremonies are counted among the most colorful ceremonies alongside weddings. The ceremonies, which are usually marked with happy faces and the constant clicking of cameras, would not be the same without graduation gowns. The long flowing garments are usually very distinctive and help differentiate the guest form the students who are graduating. Graduation gowns come in different colors such as brown, light blue and orange and black. The gowns are further complimented by graduation items such as sashes, stoles tams, caps and hoods.
At first not many individuals will be able to tell the cryptic information graduation gowns are trying to relay, but after attending a couple of graduation one should be able to tell. For example, the robs worn by faculty or doctorate graduates usually have two or more distinct colors with bell sleeves that at times have cuffs, while the master or undergraduate candidates normally put on a plain self zipping black gowns. In addition, the hood on top of the gowns of master or undergraduate graduation gowns are simply shaped since they have only the liripipe and cowl wile the doctorate graduates put on top of their gowns full shaped hoods with liripipe, cape and cowl.

Should The Top Online Article Submission Website Entrepreneur do Triathlons?

Monday, April 27th, 2009

It has recently come to my attention that one of the top online article submission website entrepreneurs is now doing triathlons. Now then having done many foot races in my life and several Biathlons and many Triathlons, I know this can be a very strenuous activity. In fact it can be over whelming for some. Can we afford to have the top online article submission website entrepreneur of all times hurt or injured in such an event?

Who would run the show if the fearless leader gets eaten by a Great White Shark during the swimming portion of the triathlon or gets run over by a Mack Truck during the biking phase of the triathlon. What if his toes turn purple inside those New Balance Cross trainer shoes? This could lead to poor circulation and amputation? We must protect these fearless leaders from themselves, as to not disrupt the number one online article submission website on the Internet.

Never the less we must also applaud the fearless leader; Excellent indeed. Way to Go! BTW- did he write an article for the “Triathlon Category” yet? How about Goal Setting category? Keep up the great work, staying in shape is smart. And do not worry about the swimming, that will come with time, perhaps a lesson or two might also help.

In the shorter triathlons; the person who gets out of the water first can really make time. Also during the running phase lean forward more and move those arms. Great Work and kudos go to our Internet Entrepreneur! The Knight in Shinning Bicycle Shorts! Consider all this in 2006.

The Ironman Triathlon – Some Tips for Your Ironman Swim

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Your first Ironman race-swim. You’ve come so far and now the big day is here. The beach is so crowded. You look around with apprehension, self-doubt and possibly just plain fear. Your heart is racing and you wonder if you even belong here.

Of course you do. You’ve worked long and hard for this. There need not be self-doubt or fear. What you need is a solid plan for the swim and then you can enjoy it.

Ask 100 triathletes which of the three events is most important in determining your final result and this is what you will most likely hear.

–about 80% will say the marathon. The reasoning is that if you have a really poor day on the Ironman marathon course it will determine if and how you finish the race.

–around 18% will say the bike leg because it is the longest in distance.

–the other 2% will say it is the swim….and I am in that 2%.

The energy you can use up through inefficient swimming and fighting your way through the pack is lost for the day. You will not get it back for the bike and the run. Its almost impossible to calculate how important a stress-free, efficient swim will be to your final result.

After much trial and error, I’ve come to the realization that the swim is the most important leg of the Ironman. It goes a long way toward deciding the outcome of the next two events.

Most first time Ironmen have similar race-swim plans. Usually navigating in the open water is an issue for them so they decide they will just follow the buoy(swim markers)all the way to the big marker indicating the turn. Or else they plan to wait for 50 or 60 seconds and then follow the markers.

Trust me when I say—-this is the biggest mistake you can make and it will make your swim miserable and will dictate how the rest of your day goes. If you are fast enough to get out with the leaders then start where you want. That means you can do the course in around 55 minutes. That will not be most of you.

I tried the lane marker thing and believe me, it is NOT the way to go. Waiting for a minute doesn’t help much either. Look around you and you will see hundreds of other first timers waiting with you. Either way you will be kicked, punched, shoved under water, swam over and nearly drowned. And thats in just the first 10 minutes. It can go on for a long time. It’s no way to start your first Ironman race-swim.

Several years ago I was looking at an overhead picture of an Ironman swim start and it suddenly dawned on me where I should have been swimming all those years. At the same time I was working on a long, smooth, relaxed stroke and wasn’t thrashing in the water anymore.

My next Ironman I tried my theory out and I couldn’t believe how much I enjoyed the swim. I felt relaxed the whole time. I never got kicked or punched or run into once and I came out of the water feeling like I’d hardly worked. AND, I had a personal best by 5 minutes.

Now I’ll tell you how to have a pressure free, relaxed Ironman race-swim.

First, make sure you have worked on your swim stroke to make it smooth, efficient and relaxed. Its a needless waste of energy to thrash your arms and legs as fast as you can for 2.4 miles.

Before the swim start, make your way far, far to the left. As far as you can go. You want to the last person out there to the left. You don’t want anyone on your right. Well, maybe one or two people, but not dozens. The marker buoys should be way over on your right.

When the gun signals the start of the race-swim, wait 10 or 15 seconds(that’s all)and pick your outside line, keeping everyone to your right.

Start relaxed and smooth. Keep your heart rate down as much as possible. You most likely breathe to your right. That’s perfect. Everytime you breathe you will see the thrashing arms and legs and everyone else getting knocked silly.

The beauty of this system is that you hardly ever have to look up and try and find the big turn marker. The entire field will eventually collapse toward the lane markers as the turn nears. You just collapse right along with them, always staying on the outside. When you are coming up on the marker, stay away from it!!!

Make a circle around it—12 or 15 feet away from it if you have to. STAY AWAY FROM IT!! It will get just as deadly around that marker as it was at the start. The few seconds extra you take to swim wide around the marker will be paid back 5 times. If you get in that crush at the beginning or at the turns, you lose TONS of time and it makes you waste energy that you will need later in the day.

Use this system for the entire swim. Doesn’t matter if its out and back or out and back twice. You’ll find that as you get further into the race, the swimmers will be more spread out and you will probably be closer to the markers. That’s ok, as long as nobody is on your left.

Use this system and trust me that it works, and I guarantee it will take a lot of the worry and stress away from your first Ironman race-swim.

You will feel great when you get out of the water and excited about getting on your bike.

Swimming from Nevada to California

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

Every summer the open water swimming season peppers the calendar, and for years I have shrugged it off with complete apathy. Hell, I’m accustomed to many, many years of competitive swimming in the pool. Why would I want to jump in a large body of cold water where I cannot see the three feet in front of me, let alone the bottom? Warm chlorinated water; lane lines; starting blocks; a black line along the bottom; walls no more than 50-meters away – that’s my idea of competitive swimming. I always had a pretty adamant stance against leaving the pool.

Last year I must have had a stroke or something, because I agreed to swim a short race (one mile) in a small lake. It didn’t kill me, and I actually won an award, which always helps pique my interest. I’m hesitant to say that it was actually fun, but it was pleasant enough for me to consider trying it again. The screaming muscle pain in my forearms and back following the race was close to convincing me to never do it again, but fortunately I subscribe to the “no pain, no gain” mantra. What’s a little soreness if there’s a sense of accomplishment that comes with it?

This year I made a conscious decision to take a few more dips into the open water to test my resolve and see if a level of enjoyment could be sustained. I participated in three different events and loved every minute of them. Sure, the waters were colder than I usually like, and my body had to endure a bit of punishment it’s not accustomed to (plus, there’s shrinkage), but the thrill generated by the competition convinced me that adding open water swims to my racing repertoire is a definite must.

After seeing how well I had adapted to this new venue, my coach pointed out an unwritten rule for those who opt to compete outside the pool: the Trans Tahoe Relay is a rite of passage everyone must go through before truly considering themselves an open water swimmer. She actually posed it as a challenge, and I was not about to let her think I was a lame wuss who’s unwilling to brave some extreme elements. Phooey!

The Trans Tahoe Relay is an 11.5-mile trek across Lake Tahoe, starting on the Nevada side and finishing on the California shore. Six-man teams enter the race (though some crazy souls incredibly went the distance solo), with each participant swimming a half-hour shift first, followed by a 15-minute swim, and subsequent 10-minute swims until reaching the finish. Teams are responsible for bringing their own boat to follow the swimmer and provide a transport for supplies and those waiting their turn in the drink. No wetsuits are allowed in the frigid water, which usually falls on either side of 60-degrees this time of year. We were blessed with perfect weather conditions, ensuring relatively calm water at an agreeable temperature. Last year the weather gods were not so kind, as the swimmers had to deal with windy, overcast conditions and choppy water. This fact did not go unmentioned by the veterans who thought the newbies (me) had it too easy.

Race day began at 5:00 a.m. with a small breakfast and an injection of caffeine. Lucky for us, one of our teammates owns a sweet pad about 15 minutes from the lake, so we were afforded some creature comforts before heading out. The morning air was a crisp, but the clear, blue sky indicated that we were going to be in for a quick warm-up. The residence and boat were on the finish line side of the lake, so we had to load up the boat and make our way to the other side. The rookie boat driver in me clumsily maneuvered out of port and revved it across the lake, skipping across the glassy water (words cannot aptly describe how fun that was).

The starting area was pure insanity. Leadoff swimmers begin on the beach and swim out to a myriad of team boats trying to find their own, while the boaters search the waters for their man (or woman). Most boats adorn something distinguishing to facilitate the spotting, but this doesn’t necessarily mean this process goes smoothly. We were fortunate to find our guy pretty quickly and headed out across the lake, though others had a more difficult time making their way through the chaos. Initial problems (and maybe panic for the swimmers) are very understandable, as they have to power their way through the pack and swim among the boats, trying not to get hit by them or swim into the propellers, while trying to find their team. I had heard nightmare stories about being the first swimmer in the water, so I was pretty adamant about passing the buck and taking the second leg of the race. Call me what you like, but I was not about to risk my life in the first ten minutes of a very long race. Maybe I’ll suck it up and find the balls to be more daring another time.

When it was my turn to enter the water, the butterflies in my tummy were ferociously circling in anticipation of the colder-than-I would-prefer water and the arduous task of flailing in it for half an hour. Upon jumping in, my body was completely covered in goose bumps, and I could feel my testicles retreating for higher ground (the aforementioned shrinkage at work). I was careful to not start off too fast, in fear of burning out quick and really suffering before the task at hand was completed. Despite my efforts to stay calm at the beginning, my lungs began to tire and gasp as they attempted to adjust to the mountainous elevation (in the neighborhood of 6,200 feet). About ten minutes in to it, I began to get comfortable and was able to kick it up a notch and see what kind of pace I could sustain the rest of the way. I forged ahead as fast as my little body could go, constantly breathing to my left in order to keep an eye on our boat (for some reason I got a sense of safety knowing exactly where my teammates were). I’m not going to lie and say this was a piece of cake, as I was pretty wiped out towards the end of my time in the water, and I was more than happy when I was given the signal to climb back on board.

While working my way through the lake, my eyes darted about, taking in the surroundings amidst dark blue water so deep that the hue eventually slips into the shiny blackness that houses the bottom. It was amazing to see beams of sunlight reflecting off the lake floor and shining back upward, appearing like searchlights piercing through the nighttime sky. The phenomenon captured my attention a few too many times, which resulted in me straying off course due to my lack of concentration. It can be really hard for the simpleminded (like me) to stay focused in open water swims, especially if the clarity allows you to gaze around.

Once I was back on the boat I turned down the opportunity to drive and opted to roost up at the front and enjoy the warm morning sun. This was pure bliss – on a boat in the middle of Lake Tahoe on a flawless summer day. The weather may have been perfect as I lounged about, but the downtime between my swims began to drag on after awhile. Occasional glances back in the direction of the starting area offered up a sight of many, many boats in the distance. To counteract the boredom, I daydreamed that we had escaped from the shore and the pack of boats was trying to chase us down. I watched them and relished in the fact that they were not catching up to us (I know, I watch too much TV). In the opposite direction, the race leaders appeared as white flecks along the horizon, so there was really no point in playing make-believe with them.

Throughout the duration of our jaunt across the lake, we encountered a few other competitors as we passed them (or vise versa in some cases). As the boats got close to one another by, it was fun to engage in mindless banter (and a little smack talk) with the others. For the last half of the race, we had the unfortunate honor of being close to the only naked boat in the race (apparently there is at least one of them every year). I say it was unfortunate because they were all guys – flabby, older men to be exact. Is it too much to ask that the team going sans clothing would have a few female hotties?

The teams in each division were distinguished by the color of their swim caps, which were issued before the race. Our division was wearing light blue caps, so we were constantly on the lookout for our competition. We had two groups ahead in our crosshairs, one of which was within striking distance as we approached the finish line. Our final swimmer caught the fading competitor, as she sprinted for the beach with about three minutes to go. It was quite exhilarating to cap-off a four-hour race (3 hours and 57 minutes, to be exact) with a dash for the finish – at least, it was exhilarating to watch.

In the end, we finished 12th overall (out of 98) and third in our division. We only needed ten shifts in the water (two of our teammates only had to swim once), which I thought was pretty impressive for a group of mostly-first timers. I’m very happy that I can check the Trans Tahoe relay off my to-do list, but I’m thinking this may be my only time doing it. I think I want to keep the fantastic conditions in my memories of this race, and not taint that with possible crappy weather in subsequent years.

Who am I kidding? I’ll be back again.
